The public hearing was so well attended that not one but two overflow rooms to receive everyone interested in the future of South Carolina\u2019s energy supply. 76 people signed up to make their voice heard and, approximately 300 were listening to what everyone had to say!<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three utility CEOs addressed the public hearing. Dominion\u2019s SC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fitsnews.com\/2023\/10\/19\/south-carolina-energy-hearing-google-gets-put-on-blast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CEO Keller Kissam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explained that SC needs 9 GW of electricity capacity, both baseload and dispatchable to handle the state&#8217;s growth, a statement supported by Duke\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michael-callahan-7913966\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael P. Callahan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Santee Cooper\u2019s CEO <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/profile\/person\/15957698?embedded-checkout=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jimmy Staton.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The three began the public hearing by stating that a natural gas Giga project is the only option that makes sense.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it?<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were a lot of concerns from many stakeholders. One can say that there were three main categories of stakeholders besides the utility companies:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-c923877 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c923877\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2e10c83\" data-id=\"2e10c83\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-54709bd elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"54709bd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. Legal<\/h5>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-b96b22e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"b96b22e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2288c77\" data-id=\"2288c77\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3eec820 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3eec820\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This group is concerned about the fact that the bill gives almost \u201calmighty power to the utility companies\u201d. The biggest concern is the lack of transparency from the utility companies, they wouldn\u2019t have to declare the cost for the Giga plant(s), how much land they need, where the pipelines are intended to go if there are any environmental damages, for which they wouldn\u2019t be liable and all legal battles would go straight to the supreme court. Just about all lawyers are seriously concerned about the transfer of power, from the different authorities that currently protect the citizens, to the utilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only arguments given were that South Carolina has such an energy deficiency that the investment in giga-scale gas-fired electricity has to be rushed and that, historically, large infrastructure projects have been beset by legal problems and court battles.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To minimize obstruction and delays (which normally is a protection for misappropriation,), the bill proposes to dismantle the South Carolina\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ors.sc.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Office of Regulatory Staff (ORS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which represents the public interests of the state in utility regulation, oversees such concerns, including financial, rights of way, etc. The numerous questions about the proposal were left unanswered and we will most likely see battles regarding this moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><br \/><b><\/b><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Environmental &#8211; Why do we need a huge Giga plant?<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were predominantly two arguments brought to the table, one was \u201cWhy do the utility companies have to build a giga-plant where it used to be a coal plant?\u201d The County is still cleaning up after it and the second was the fact that natural gas is a fossil fuel-derived gas and as such, it\u2019s not clean, its combustion emitting Greenhouse Gases. The previous coal plant has over decades negatively affected the community and they asked, \u201cWhy should we pay with our health one more time? Haven\u2019t we paid enough? Can\u2019t somebody at least share the load?\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building a pipeline (without environmental or financial considerations for the landowners) will have a negative environmental impact.<\/span><\/p><p><br \/><br \/><b><\/b><\/p><ul><li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Using the sun<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several non-profit organizations were promoting solar energy. There were predominantly three arguments from the Representatives supporting the Bill, one was that solar isn\u2019t baseload, the second was that it\u2019s not clean, and, the third was the amount of land needed.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The land needed is mostly because of tax construction. Science in both the US and Europe has shown that by farming under the panels (agrivoltaics), the farmer can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90861486\/agrivoltaics-crops-under-solar-panels-good-for-panels#:~:text=Agrivoltaics%20is%20the%20technical%20term,income%20stream%20from%20energy%20production.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve the yields<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so they can make more money farming and, at the same time make money from the electricity. This way the solar wouldn\u2019t take up any space at all.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are not saying that solar is the only way forward but, it has a place in the mix. There\u2019s still some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/solar-energy-panels-recycling\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed when it comes to recycling batteries and panels. It\u2019s not in such a rush that some want us to believe, Europe has panels that are 30 years old and still working. Sure they are not as effective as new ones but they are still effective.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>What does the industry think about the future of energy supply?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you listen to experts, they are pretty much all in line that nuclear power is needed for an unforeseeable future, the uranium mining is dirty but the generation plants represent one of the cleanest energy sources we have. We will need to invest in the storage of waste and efficiency, although the new<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/nuclear-fuel-cycle\/nuclear-power-reactors\/advanced-nuclear-power-reactors.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> generations of nuclear facilities use up to 99% of the fuel rods,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the old ones only 10%&#8230;<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/dows-seadrift-texas-location-selected-for-x-energy-advanced-smr-nuclear-project-to-deliver-safe-reliable-zero-carbon-emissions-power-and-steam-production-301821847.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dow&#8217;s Seadrift,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Texas location selected for X-energy advanced SMR nuclear project to deliver safe, reliable, zero carbon emissions power and steam production. This won\u2019t happen tomorrow but, 15-20 years down the line, modular nuclear will most likely be a reality.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.manufacturingtalks.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Vinosky<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a background in manufacturing, has helped companies such as Ralston-Purina and General Mills make products ranging from food to plastics and paints to bourbon and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/co2coalition.org\/teammember\/lars-schernikau\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Lars Schernikau<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a discussion about the energy transition the world is struggling with. Listening to Dr. Schernikau some things stand out, one is the energy density &#8211; coal, oil, and gas have a higher density &#8211; and today we have problems fully replacing them. Natural gas has become a political tool for governments that aren\u2019t the US, or Europe&#8217;s allies. Germany decided to close the nuclear plants and go all in on renewable, solar, and wind, and to begin with Russian natural gas as an energy transition fuel. It turned out to be a very expensive strategy, today Germany has the highest energy prices in Europe. Each approach has its advantages and disadvantages, making them suitable for different situations.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Centralized generation:<\/b><\/p><p><b>Large-scale power plants:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These facilities, typically coal, gas, nuclear, or large hydro dams, are located away from population centers and generate enormous amounts of electricity.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Transmission lines:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The generated electricity travels over long distances through high-voltage transmission lines to reach consumers.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claimed advantages:<\/span><\/p><p><b>Economies of scale: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building and operating a single large plant can be cheaper per unit of electricity produced compared to many smaller ones.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Reliability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Large plants can be more reliable due to redundancy and backup systems, depending on the setup.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages:<\/span><\/p><p><b>Transmission losses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sending electricity over long distances leads to energy loss in the lines. The U.S. loses around 5% of its electricity annually during transmission and distribution (T&amp;D) according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=43275\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Energy Information Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Environmental impact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fossil fuel plants contribute to air and water pollution, hydro facilities contribute to relocation and loss of habitat, and nuclear plants raise concerns about waste disposal.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Vulnerability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A single point of failure, like a breakdown at the plant or damage to transmission lines, can affect a large number of consumers.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Distributed energy generation<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advantages<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not so vulnerable since there are plenty of plants<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less sensitive\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower local environmental impact, depending on the technology used<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower transmission losses<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can be located at the point of load demand, reducing additional investments in T&amp;D, also reducing the need for additional rights of way.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disadvantages<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More expensive if we don\u2019t turn to<\/span><\/p><p><b>Manufacturing modularized power plants<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Bill 5118, a 15% reduction in price was mentioned as the benefit of going big, and centralized. 15% price reduction from the first to the equipment that comes from the assembly line would be a shame. Already Henry Ford was able to reduce the price of the T-Ford (not considering inflation):\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1908 (Initial price): <\/span> <b>$825 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">($27,656.96 today)<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1925 (Final price): <\/span> <b>$260\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">($4,582.20 today)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In today\u2019s value, Mr. Ford was able to reduce the price by approximately 700% through mass production.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>The N+1 Philosophy to Reduce Cost and Increase Price Stability<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our co-founder Magnus had the pleasure of discussing paper mills this past Friday evening, and it was quite interesting. The mills make money by making paper, nothing surprising there but, to make paper they need to heat paper fiber, and the waste energy is used to make electricity in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/chp\/what-chp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combined heat and power plant (CHP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Then there are perhaps other manufacturers nearby who need the leftover steam, some plants also have black liquor as waste, which they sell, and in some cases, since the water used needs treatment which can support the local municipality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this drives the cost of electricity downwards, making more feedstocks competitive with fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Using multiple feedstocks and energy sources<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By using multiple feedstocks, it\u2019s possible to minimize the effect of volatility when it comes to prices and\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>The grid<\/b><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ferc.gov\/news-events\/news\/ferc-transmission-reform-paves-way-adding-new-energy-resources-grid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FERC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took a step in the modernization of the nation\u2019s transmission grid by streamlining the interconnection process for transmission providers, providing greater timing and cost certainty to interconnection customers, and preventing undue discrimination against new sources of power generation.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>What do the manufacturers need?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be able to manufacture, we need stable, accountable, and cheap energy. If this is available, then the industry will thrive, generate jobs, and drive our economy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>What does the society need?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A robust energy system is critical to the Nation\u2019s economic, energy, and national security. Once again, the utility industry needs to look at various industries, and learn from them, and what they do good and bad. Relying on others when it comes to our energy needs is a risk to our National Security.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conclusion is, that the industry needs a sound energy mix, and the utility industry needs to look at the IT industry and modularize, and distribute the power generation for increased resilience, stability, and security.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The industry has to meet the utility industry, so modularity, flexibility, and N+1 thinking can change our energy generation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today one of the major problems is that the industries don\u2019t collaborate, everything is political from transition to using feedstock supply as a political tool.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solving the Global challenges can\u2019t be done without collaboration.
