In South Carolina, there are at least two companies that seem to be manufacturing fertilizers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolina-eastern.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carolina Eastern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Inc. and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icl-group.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ICL Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The other companies are more obvious companies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libertysteelgroup.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liberty Steel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Georgetown, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deecometals.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DEECO Metals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inc., to mention a few. Companies like BMW, Volvo, and ZF are also quite naturally large emitting companies if they haven\u2019t moved over to solar, which is hard based on their need for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Base_load\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">base load energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Our needs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today we are heavily dependent on base load energy since our operations and energy needs are twenty-four-seven and the infrastructure for solar, wind, and biomass isn\u2019t built and the then much-needed storage isn\u2019t in place.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Will it ever?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most likely yes, Solar is developing, and the battery industry is one of the hottest industries with companies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proterra.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proterra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enersys.com\/en-gb\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EnerSys<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aesc-group.com\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AESC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cirbasolutions.com\/?gad_source=1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwqdqvBhCPARIsANrmZhPFfJgV1LucWXJ3C7JAFPcMGYg-U_9N9otxc30drrfDJ8ZAzlYmX14aAnG3EALw_wcB\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cirba Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> already operating in South Carolina.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>South Carolina also has a strong biomass industry potential with:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Carolina has roughly 12.6 million acres of forestland.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of that, around 87% is in private ownership.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many private forest owners participate in programs like the Forest Stewardship Program (FSP) which promotes sustainable management practices.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biomass as a feedstock can be sourced from \u201cfor purpose grown\u201d as well as forestry waste biomass.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well-managed industry can help absorb GHG long term as well as provide drought and flood protection, reducing wildfire risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we have a growing Solar industry and a way forward with biomass that potentially can supply South Carolina with a large portion of the energy needs that the nuclear can\u2019t and, shouldn&#8217;t do today since the nuclear industry isn\u2019t distributed, doesn&#8217;t reduce our waste, restore our soil.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>Does this mean that all fossil fuels should be taken offline?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, today there is still a need, and there are still areas where it makes sense to have fossil fuel but, we don\u2019t need it to be our primary source of energy any longer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many areas, fossil fuel is also an important part of the many manufacturing processes, especially as chemical feedstock:&nbsp; Natural gas, particularly the main component methane, is a source of hydrogen and carbon, which are essential building blocks for a wide range of chemicals. These chemicals are used in the production of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene, are commonly used in packaging, textiles, and various parts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paints and coatings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Synthetic fibers like polyester and nylon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicines and pharmaceuticals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It would be a shame if we ran out of highly valuable natural gas so we can\u2019t produce products that our world needs. It took our earth +200 million years to produce fossil fuels, let\u2019s not waste it, let\u2019s be careful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What about the electric grid &#8211; is it ready for the change that needs to be made?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at 2040, there is no exact number on how much we need to invest into the electrical grid but, here&#8217;s some information on expected US grid investment:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A report by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transitionzero.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TransitionZero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a climate analytics non-profit, estimates an additional $1.7 trillion investment in transmission infrastructure across the US is needed by 2040.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/theenergyst.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Energyst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that the US grid capacity needs to double by 2040, requiring an investment of $1.9 trillion to achieve.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless if it\u2019s US$ 1.7 or 1.9 trillion, we are talking about the same amount of money as our defense, and social security industries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>Thoughts and conclusions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at generation, transmission and distribution, EV, and electrification of our industries, our Global political landscape, global warming regardless of the reasons is a fact, we need to have a very holistic view, not put all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www-aftonbladet-se.translate.goog\/nyheter\/a\/ab5rqd\/fiasko-nar-usa-skulle-bygga-ny-karnkraft?_x_tr_sl=sv&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eggs in one basket<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We should diversify our sources of energy and distribute the generation, improving reliability, resilience, and predictable rate development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at generation and transition from a high degree of fossil fuels to more biomass, that can also produce biochar, we could reduce some of our overall energy needs. This is due to the manufacturing of fertilizers being energy intensive, whereas biochar is a byproduct of energy production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biochar will never fully replace fertilizers but, thinking that biochar can replace some of the use of fertilizers increases the opportunity of making the State not only improve the yields both for the farmers as well as the forestry industry, but also become carbon neutral quicker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/356689909_Combined_effects_of_biochar_and_fertilizer_applications_on_yield_A_review_and_meta-analysis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found biochar alone increased crop yield by 25.3%, while inorganic fertilizers increased it by 21.9%. It also showed that mixing biochar with fertilizers will improve the yield even more since the fertilizer won\u2019t leach out of the soil which normally happens. Thus, we will see reduced costs for farmers as well as reduced runoff into water streams, meaning less damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the grid, transmission, and distribution upgrade needs regardless if we invest in older centralized fossil fuel-fed energy or newer distributed renewable energy solutions, we still have to think about things can we use our energy sources long term, and what risks our decisions carry? A larger paper mill told me for example, \u201cWe can\u2019t go all in on natural gas, because of the supply not being stable enough for the next 10 years\u201d. This is naturally their conclusion but, it is an example of how everyone should think.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>Looking at the way forward<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to sit down with a broader group of people to bring forward legislation that will lead the way for South Carolina and our development. The question is extremely important as well as complex, it will need innovative solutions, a lot of discussions, and most likely a plan that can be flexible and evolve, because if we build monoliths, then the risk is large that we will see a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nukegate_scandal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nukegate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scandal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US Manufacturers need <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/a\/ab5rqd\/fiasko-nar-usa-skulle-bygga-ny-karnkraft?_x_tr_sl=sv&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term stable, affordable energy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to compete at a Global level, so energy is a very important question and can\u2019t be taken lightly.
