The fittingly named sludge is a combination of wastewater and sewage, and its application on farms has been seen as a way to keep waste out of waterways and feed fields.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, the application of sludge in Maine was regarded as safe, as it was in several other states; a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.epa.gov\/npdes\/pubs\/owm0031.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1994 booklet from the EPA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claimed that the \u201cbeneficial application of biosolids to provide crop nutrients or to condition the soil is not only safe but good public policy.\u201d The state later discovered, however, that the sludge contained harmful PFAS.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sources of contamination were numerous. Once the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/laws-regulations\/summary-clean-water-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean Water Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passed in 1972, many chemicals and toxins that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sunjournal.com\/2022\/09\/24\/odors-from-a-polluted-androscoggin-river-used-to-peel-paint-off-houses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flowed freely from paper mills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into Maine\u2019s rivers started to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/me\/maine\/news\/2022\/03\/07\/sludge-explained--tracing-contamination-on-maine-farms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">processed through sewage plants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.wisconsin.gov\/chemical\/pfas.htm#:~:text=These%20PFAS%20can%20be%20found,Grease%2Dresistant%20paper.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forever chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that appeared in cleaning chemicals, makeup, and nonstick pans made their way down household drains and ended up in local sewage plants.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the spring of 2022, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/environment-and-outdoors\/2023-02-01\/more-than-50-maine-farms-impacted-by-pfas-but-state-officials-see-glimmer-of-hope\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 50 farms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Tier 1 areas learned they had high levels of forever chemicals in their products, their fields, and their water. Some farms were able to stop production temporarily while they identified possible solutions. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/mar\/22\/i-dont-know-how-well-survive-the-farmers-facing-ruin-in-americas-forever-chemicals-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several farmers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including Nordell and Davis, were forced to close up shop permanently. Farmers were hurting, consumers were worried, and Maine\u2019s food system looked to be in crisis.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bdb73d0 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bdb73d0\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-20ce457\" data-id=\"20ce457\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-326decd elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"326decd\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom an agriculture perspective, we want the soil to come out the other side usable and healthy. But in the meantime, we have adopted the truism that PFAs do not have to mean the end of a farm, and there may be alternative options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a7f2f26 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a7f2f26\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1b56b62\" data-id=\"1b56b62\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3fc0dc6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3fc0dc6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>1. Supporting Farmers and Conducting Research<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial support from the PFAS Emergency Relief Fund assists with direct monetary assistance and covers the cost of biosolids testing, and health coverage for affected farmers, and has also been used to invest in infrastructure for PFAS relief and remediation.<\/span><\/p><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe provide a continuum of support,\u201d <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dacf\/about\/news\/news.shtml?id=10059413\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McBrady says DACF\u2019s<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Brady of the collective effort. \u201cFirst and foremost, we are on the ground doing scientific analysis of the source of the PFAS with comprehensive testing that we pay for. This gives a blueprint of the situation and provides an opportunity to consider mitigation strategies such as changing the rotation of livestock, cleaning up the water, or trying a different crop.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t that much great land for farming in Maine,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amy-fisher-4aa2436\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Fisher<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, President &amp; CEO of the Maine Farmland Trust, referring to the state\u2019s famously rocky soil. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo we cannot lose any of it to contamination.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are a lot of theories being tested,\u201d says Maine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meaganhennessey\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DACF\u2019s PFAS director Meagan Hennessey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe are eagerly awaiting research breakthroughs that we can start implementing.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><b>Methods of Remediation<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides using biomass with Oaktree\u2019s technology, scientists are also looking at different energy grass types to speed up the cleaning process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Some examples are Canola, Sunflower and Hemp (all containing Omega 3 &amp; 6):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Field studies have shown some promise for using canola, sunflower, and hemp to remediate PFAS-contaminated soil.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes these plants particularly interesting is that they contain monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omega-3_fatty_acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Omega-6_fatty_acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and can be used as both primary &#8211; and cover crops.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><b>Opportunity to capitalize on the existing vegetable oil market.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futuremarketinsights.com\/reports\/omega-3-market#:~:text=Omega%203%20Market%20Outlook%20(2023,valuation%20of%20US%24%2022.02%20billion.\"><b>Future Market Insights: <\/b> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omega-3 at $ 9.3 billion<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.maximizemarketresearch.com\/market-report\/omega-6-market\/86580\/\"><b>MMR<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omega-6 at $5.98 billion<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three crops can be farmed in Maine. Here&#8217;s some information to consider:<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Success stories: Canola is already being grown in some parts of Maine, particularly Aroostook County.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Climatic suitability: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The climate in Maine seems to be generally compatible with canola production.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Research and development: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Maine Cooperative Extension offers resources and recommendations for growing canola in Maine.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>However, there are also some factors to keep in mind:<\/b><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Soil conditions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Canola has specific soil pH requirements and may not thrive in all Maine soils.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Weed control: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weed management can be a challenge for canola crops.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Best practices:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Consulting with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension or other agricultural experts is recommended to ensure successful canola farming in Maine.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canola prefers a soil pH that&#8217;s neither too acidic nor too alkaline. The ideal range for canola growth is between 5.5 and 8.3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maine&#8217;s soils naturally tend to be on the acidic side.\u00a0 Research from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension indicates that unamended soils typically fall between a pH of 4.5 and 5.0. This means they are acidic and dominated by hydrogen (H+) and aluminum (Al3+) ions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oaktree\u2019s research shows that biochar from wood typically falls in a mildly acidic to alkaline range, which is roughly pH 5.5 to 8.0 and our studies show that biochar derived from biosolids at similar temperatures (around 700\u00b0C and above) have a pH ranging from 8.5 to 9.5.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using biochar will increase the Ph levels in the soil, if biosolids are used as feedstock, then the biochar will also contain nitrogen and phosphorous, partly replacing the need for chemical fertilizers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Cover crops to ensure that the soil stays healthy<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemp shows promise as a cover crop and research is ongoing to explore its full potential.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Here&#8217;s a breakdown of its potential benefits:<\/b><\/p><p><b>Soil Health: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemp can improve soil health in several ways. Its fast growth and deep root system help suppress weeds, reducing the need for herbicides. It also helps retain moisture in the soil and can add organic matter as it decomposes.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Nitrogen Fixation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some varieties of hemp, like sunn hemp, are nitrogen-fixing legumes. These plants capture atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into a form usable by other plants, reducing the need for synthetic nitrogen fertilizers.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Weed Suppression:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Hemp&#8217;s dense growth shades out weeds, helping to control weed populations naturally.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Biomass Production: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hemp can produce a significant amount of biomass after its main growing cycle. This can be used as a feedstock when regenerating the soil. Besides healthy soil, biomass can also generate a significant amount of carbon-negative electricity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4c9d8b4 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4c9d8b4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/portal\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may not be able to farm wheat for a while but, other crops can be farmed and:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8.3 million acres (around 50% of Maine&#8217;s working forests) are certified as sustainably managed by independent auditors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maine has a total of 18 million acres of forest.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking at Sweden with similar climate to Maine where between 40 and 60% of all electricity comes from Biomass.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6614841 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6614841\"
